What are orthodontics?

Orthodontics are a specialized dental field dedicated to diagnosing and treating dental and facial irregularities. With the use of corrective appliances and techniques, orthodontic treatments help to move teeth into proper alignment, correct jaw positioning and ensure a proper bite, enhancing both the aesthetics and function of your smile.

What is an orthodontist?

Orthodontists specialize in aligning teeth, correcting bite issues and guiding facial structure development. While Aspen Dental doesn't have orthodontists on-site, our clear aligner experts at nearby locations are ready to help you begin your Motto® aligners treatment. Let's start your journey to a beautiful smile together!

Fun facts you didn’t know about orthodontia

Orthodontics, from the Greek "orthos" (straight) and "dont" (tooth), has ancient origins. Fascinating archaeological discoveries show early civilizations like the ancient Egyptians used orthodontic devices, and the Romans used gold wires to straighten teeth, demonstrating a long-standing quest by humans for the perfect smile.

How orthodontists differ from dentists

Orthodontists

Orthodontists specialize in correcting improper bites, straightening teeth and addressing jaw alignment through treatments like braces and clear aligners.

Dentists

Dentists focus on regular dental check-ups, cleanings and procedures such as dental fillings, crowns and root canals to maintain and restore dental health.

Why you need orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment not only helps you achieve a beautiful smile, it also ensures your oral health remains in top shape. Misaligned teeth and jaws can lead to a variety of issues, including:

Person brushing their teeth, emphasizing the importance of oral hygiene in orthodontic care.

Oral health

When teeth are misaligned, it can cause difficulty cleaning teeth properly, which increases the risk of cavities and gum diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Person experiencing jaw pain, highlighting potential discomforts associated with orthodontic issues.

Jaw issues

Jaw issues can cause strain on chewing muscles, potentially causing headaches, TMJ syndrome and jaw pain.

Speech

Speech impediments that may affect communication and the way you speak if teeth are crooked or your jaw is misaligned.

Tooth decay

When teeth are out of place, this can increase the risk for tooth wear, tooth decay and damage such as cracks.

When to get orthodontic treatment

Orthodontics are not just for children. It’s becoming more popular for adults to seek orthodontic treatment. These are the ages when patients may seek orthodontic treatment.

Children (ages 7-17)

Although Motto® at Aspen Dental does not currently treat young children and teens for orthodontia, we’ll note that early intervention can help in guiding the growth of the jaw and incoming teeth, preventing more severe issues down the line.

Teens and young adults (ages 18-25)

This is the most common time for orthodontic treatment as the teeth and jaw are still actively growing. At this time, Aspen Dental only treats orthodontic patients 18 years old and up with Motto®. Take our Smile Assessment here to see if you’re a good candidate for Motto® clear aligners treatment.

Adults (ages 25-55+)

It’s never too late to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile. Adults can benefit from various modern orthodontic treatments tailored to their needs. Learn more about how more and more older adults are choosing orthodontic treatment here. >
