What are Teeth Aligners?

How do teeth aligners work?

Teeth aligners are a series of custom-fitted trays designed to move your teeth a little bit at a time. As you wear each set of clear aligners, they will start to fix and shift the overall misalignment of your teeth. The benefits of teeth aligners not only improve the look but the health of your teeth as well.

During your initial Motto consultation at Aspen Dental, you’ll meet your doctor and smile advisors, who will take precision scans of your teeth to create your custom-fitted aligners. Your doctor will help diagnose your misalignment and create a treatment plan that works best for you. You’ll leave that day with your personalized starter tray to help prep your teeth for your first set of aligners, which will be ready in about four weeks’ time.

Types of teeth alignment issues

Misaligned teeth are common and are treatable in most cases. Having a straighter smile is about more than just aesthetics. When your bite is off, chewing can create stress on areas that are not designed to cope with that pressure—leading to premature wear and tear, jaw pain and headaches. Plus, crooked smiles are harder to clean. Below is a short list of the most common types of misaligned teeth.

Crowded teeth

This occurs when the teeth do not have enough space to grow. As a result, they grow in unnatural positions.

Gapped teeth

Also known as diastema, gaps in your teeth can occur anywhere and at any age.

A crossbite occurs when the top teeth fit inside of the bottom teeth.

An overbite is an overlapping of your front teeth and jaw.

Underbites occur when your lower front teeth are more forward than your upper front teeth.

Open bite

Open bites occur when the front teeth do not overlap the lower teeth.
